WWE Royal Rumble 2018 Thoughts and Results
I gotta say…I’m impressed! Besides the Universal Championship, this was the best Royal Rumble PPV in years. Both Rumble matches delivered with surprises and athleticism. Here are my quick thoughts on the show.
AJ Styles (Champ) vs. Kevin Owens & Sami Zayn –
2-on-1 Handicap Match for the WWE Championship
This was a decent match and surprisingly not as intense as I thought it would be. Zayn did the majority of the work, which really protected Owens and also planted the seed for their inevitable breakup. I don’t think the match really got out of second gear and that Styles would have benefited physically from a one-on-one match more, although the message sent from winning this is probably more important. Styles now will definitely be heading into Wrestlemania as the champ and it’s well deserved.
I had said in my predictions that Shane McMahon and Daniel Bryan would get involved. They never did. That doesn’t make sense based on the lead in shows to the PPV. Then after a guy from their brand (who I’ll discuss later) wins the Rumble match, they’re acting like BFFs? That’s not constant writing, guys.
Winner: AJ Styles
The Usos (Champs) vs. Chad Gable & Shelton Benjamin –
2 out of 3 Falls for the Smackdown Tag Team Championship
This is exactly what I wanted but with the wrong team going over and the match being too short! All kidding aside, WWE definitely has faith in the Usos and I’ll be surprised if they’re defeated before getting put in a multi-team match at Wrestlemania. This match was decent but nowhere the level I thought it would be.
Winners: The Usos
30-Man Royal Rumble Match
Haters can fuck off because this was probably one of the best paced and booked Rumble matches in years. They baited the IWC the probability of Roman Reigns or John Cena winning. The excellent surprise of Rey Mysterio appearing made the last 10 even more exciting. I thought it was excellent of WWE booking the old guard vs. the new guard, even if Reigns should have been a part of the more recent “team.”
Would it helped Ziggler’s character, whatever it is now, to actually come out at 30, make it halfway to the ring and then turn around to protest? I think that would have made a bigger impact than what was booked. Who am I kidding? I’ve watched wrestling since I was a kid and couldn’t understand being apart of WWE Creative.
I f’n hope The Hurricane is back full time. I marked out huge. Shane Helms is the man. I also enjoyed Andrade Cien Almas in the match after the huge respect I gained for the man after the main event on NXT Takeover. Props as well to see how the WWE would take to Adam Cole as well.
Nakamura winning is what I predicted and the right person to put on the path to against AJ Style to make Wrestlemania the huge event it needs to be. You know Reigns and Cena will find their place on the cards and be a part of the Elimination Chamber match in February to “earn” their spot to face Brock Lazy.
Winner: Shinsuke Nakamura
Seth Rollins & Jason Jordan (Champs) vs. Cesaro & Sheamus –
Raw Tag Team Championship Match
Talk about a misplaced match. I just didn’t get the decision of placing this match after some of the participants where in the Royal Rumble match. They should have had this match before the Rumble or not had any of the participants in it in the match at all.
The action was great and having Jason Jordan play up his injury, not being involved in the match, was excellent booking. It gives him the heat they’re looking for but I think the match could have even more attention if it was earlier. Then again, Reigns throwing Rollins out of the match could be a catalyst for many things. The right team won.
Winners: The Bar
Brock Lesnar (Champ) vs. Braun Strowman vs. Kane –
Triple Threat Match for the Universal Championship
Garbage. Garbage. Garbage. This is the reason Dunn and Vince should be done with Creative and HHH should be put in charge. Yeah, I said that. Look at NXT’s track record. This match was an abomination and an insult to wrestling fans. Brock Lazy should not have the title. I can’t wait for Wrestlemania and the inevitable match vs. Reigns just so Lesnar can lose and get the fuck out of WWE.
I understand Kane playing the part here but it was so obvious that the lazy-man was gonna do his shit. Sorry for the language, but I’m done with this part-time, lazy fucker shit.
Winner: Brock Lazy
30-Woman Royal Rumble Match
Colour (Canadian spelling, people) me surprised at this being the last match of the night. It’s not that it didn’t deserve it, it was just unexpected.
There were so many surprise entrances that I really don’t know who WWE is keeping on! Trish Stratus looked great, as did Lita, but I don’t see them coming back in any capacity.
I’ll tell you this: Michelle McCool sucks. She always did and it showed how low the bar was the “Diva” years. Kelly Kelly and Torrie Wilson also totally proved this point. They are awful.’
Molly Holly and Beth Phoenix made their returns, albeit brief, These two are enough of a threat in the women’s division to be champs, but I’m confused why The Bella Twins were put into that scenario. Wait…I know why (and so do you).
In the end, Asuska got the win and before she even told the world who she’s facing, Ronda Rousey made her official debut. People are bitching that she took away Asuka’s win. I said in my prediction piece I didn’t want that to happen. I think the timing of it was perfect and a statement of Rousey in the ring with both champions and the women’s Royal Rumble winner was the statement that needed to be made. I’ll also give props to Stephanie McMahon for not being exuberant for her commentary during or after the match.
To end, this PPV was one of the best Royal Rumble events in years. I have to say, though, that Michael Cole needs to go. His commentary, and his lack of excitement for many of the surprise entrances in both Rumble matches, shows just out of touch he truly is…unless he wants to yell “BIG DAWG!” for Reigns.
