Star Wars: The Black Series Wave 13, Hascon Captain Rex & Force Spirit Obi-Wan
Lucky wave 13. That number seems awfully low with the amount of Star Wars Black Series figures I have hanging around my man-cave. Usually I’m really late to the party with Black Series waves due to the distribution here in Canada. Not this time, though.
I was lucky because I logged on Toys R Us (Canada) about a week ago and all of the figures from this wave were available. Not only that, I got free shipping and each figure was $23.99 Canadian, not $29.99 or $34.99 like they usually are. Whatever allotment they had sold out within an hour.
Like usual, I showcase these figures on my site to share my passion for the hobby and for people who love collecting to see these figures if they haven’t had a chance to yet. Plus, I like giving my own personal two cents on them. If you haven’t seen any of my Black Series features yet, I keep my figures in the box. Why? I hang them up to display and that’s my preference.
Yes, I know. This figure isn’t a part of Wave 13 but I wanted to showcase it because when I went out of Force Friday II, this was the only Black Series figure that alluded me and I didn’t show in that Black Series/Force Friday II feature.
I’ve mentioned before that I have some serious catching up to do with Star Wars: Rebels. And by catching up, I actually mean binge watching once I actually start watching. The show is really recommended to me by others but I just haven’t gotten around to watching it.
I know this character from the love it gets from many Facebook groups and forums, but that’s pretty much it. The Twi’lek has a pretty good face/head sculpt but the outfit is a bit bland. I’m sure it captures her pilot outfit well, but it doesn’t make for an exciting figure. Too bad the only accessory she comes with is a small pistol. It doesn’t seem like there’s a lot of bang for the buck here.
I think this is my favourite figure out of wave 13. The face sculpt and the amount of extras Maz comes with make it a good value for the dough. I would like to know more about Maz Kanata and I hope more of her story is told in The Last Jedi.
I’ve seen a bunch of pictures of some other people’s Maz figures with some really wonky eyes. Thankfully the paint on mine isn’t bad at all. She looks like a turtle to me.
Elite Praetorian Guard
I loved the Emperor’s Royal Guards as a kid (I guess they’re known as Imperial Royal Guards now) so that nostalgia spills over to this figure. I thought this would be my fave figure in this line when I ordered but Maz won out.
I love the armour all over this figure but the soft goods at the bottom throw it off for me a bit. I think it would have looked better using a soft plastic instead. This is a lot of red for one figure! This will be the version of the guard I pick up with Hot Toys releases one.
Finn (First Order Disguise)
I guess this is a bit of a spoiler: Finn is going undercover in the movie! It’s all ruined now! All kidding aside, I really like the outfit and overall sculpt on this figure. It comes with a Riot Trooper weapon as well, so that’s a cool bonus for those who open their figures.
While the sculpt is really good and I can see Hasbro reusing the outfit for a generic guard, the paint on Finn’s face isn’t the best. One eye is a bit larger than the other.
General Leia Organa
While I’m happy we’re getting an older Leia to add to our collection, I think this figure isn’t the best it could be. The whole lower torso piece where the legs attach doesn’t look good. Leia looks really older on the box art than she did in the movie.
The paint on the face sculpt is lacking something. I think there’s a decent sculpt there but the paint job is just half-assed or there’s not enough to make the sculpt pop like it should.
Captain Poe Dameron
I found Poe to be a bland character in The Force Awakens, namely because we don’t know too much about him. It’s surprising that there are as many figures of this character made across the 3 3/4″ and 6″ lines. If I wasn’t a completest with these things, he’d be a character I’d skip constantly. Although I want the Riot Trooper, I never went out of my way to pick up the Poe/Trooper two-pack.
I find this figure to have the worst paint on the face of all the figures. The eyes are off and the eyebrows are huge! This sculpt looks nothing like Oscar Isaac. Actually, the sculpt may be there underneath the awful paint job.w
Hascon Exclusive Captain Rex
Captain Rex has made his appearance in the Black Series with this exclusive from Hasbro. Well, the packaging for the figure is really the only thing “exclusive” as far as I know because this figure will be released in the regular Black Series packaging later on this year. I’m not 100% sure if he’ll include with all the weapons he comes with here or if any of them are exclusive to this “early-bird” release.
I consider myself lucky because I’ve seen some other people’s pictures of this figure. I know the whole point of grabbing this exclusive is the packaging and the chance to have it earlier (which is really great for people that display them loose). Unfortunately, many have shared pictures where the inside plastic tray has been melted and mangled.
As well, there have been many pictures showing the figure with some really poor paint applications. I’m happy to say mine is pretty good although I would have liked to seen a cleaner application on the helmet. The weathering effect all over the figure is really good, though.
Obi-Wan Kenobi (Force Spirit)
STOP THE PRESSES! I was almost done this feature and had already filmed my video (you can watch at the end) when my buddy, Dustin, found one at EB Games. This is an exclusive at Walgreens in the US, so it’s nice to see Hasbro allowing a way for Canadians to score the figure.
While this is the exact same figure that has been released before as a SDCC 2016 exclusive and in the regular Black Series box packaging, the spirit/ghost visage is too hard to pass up. I’m a sucker for figures that use translucent plastic. Hell, my Power of the Force Obi-Wan Kenobi 3 3/4″ figure still remains a favourite of mine. I would have paid double for this figure because, to me, it’s a must have. Get out to EB Games in Canada or Walgreens and snag this guy!
Enjoy the video!
