WWE Battleground 2017 PPV Predictions

My expectations are actually pretty low for this PPV besides one or two matches.  Sometimes that’s a good thing because it makes me come away from an event feeling fulfilled and not disappointed.  Let’s see what this card looks like on paper.

Tye Dillinger vs. Aiden English – Kickoff Show

It’s nice to see WWE showcase these two in front of a PPV crowd.  I feel bad for English, though.  The singing gimmick is garbage and he just doesn’t have “the look” for WWE.  Dillinger, on the other hand, will probably be a player in the mid-card within the next half a year.

Winner: Tye Dillinger

Sami Zayn vs. Mike Kanellis
(no picture at this time)

It’s the rematch to their lacklustre showing on Smackdown Live last Tuesday night.  I don’t know…Mike Kanellis has to really shine for people to see what he was like in other promotions.  Unfortunately it’s all going to be eyes on his wife, Maria, and how she “wears the pants” to get him out of situations where he’s almost going to lose. There’s the cheap heel heat right there. Sami will wrestle well and help put him over.

Winner: Mike Kanellis

Charlotte Flair vs. Becky Lynch vs. Natalya vs. Tamina vs. Lana
(Winner face Naomi at Summerslam)

This is interesting because a face has the championship and at Summerslam, you’d think they’d want a heel to face Naomi.  A heel, though, has the women’s Money in the Bank briefcase and there’s way more heat when a heel cashes it against a face.  So where are they going to go with all of this? I have no idea.

I’m going to assume they’re going to want the best match possible for Summerslam so that narrows it down to Charlotte or Becky Lynch winning but the drama just may not be there for those matches. Ugh! I can’t decide!!  Let’s say Lana and Tamina are kinda working together all match and something happens where Tamina pulls a fast one on Lana and ends up getting the win.

Winner: Tamina

Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Baron Corbin

I’m glad they’ve teased this match up instead of putting it out there on Smackdown Live and made us wait a bit.  Yeah, Corbin holds the men’s Money in the Bank briefcase, but there’s no way Nakamura will be losing this match unless there is some cheating involved.  I’m going with the popular guy here.

Winner: Shinsuke Nakamura

The Usos (Champs) vs. The New Day – Smackdown Tag Team Championship

Source: WWE.com

Ugh…..please don’t let The New Day win this. Hell, if you read what I wrote in the preview for their last PPV match at Money in the Bank  it would be the exact same thing I’d write here. With Summerslam coming up, I just don’t see the fan favourites (not mine) win here.

Winners: The Usos

John Cena vs. Rusev (Flag Match)

Source: WWE.com

I frankly don’t care. I’m not a citizen of either country and I don’t care about patriotism being the thing that fuels a match.  Cena is gunning for another championship soon so he’s not losing – especially with the pride of the ol ‘ US-of-A is on the line.

Winner: John Cena

AJ Styles (Champ) vs. Kevin Owens – United States Championship Match

Source: WWE.com

Finally…a match that I’m actually excited about and looking forward to.  This will probably be the match of the night as well.  I like the chemistry these two have together and I don’t think this will be the last we’ll see these two square off.

That being said, there are some pretty interesting commercials airing here in Canada regarding the Road to Summerslam tour.  They are advertising Styles vs. Mahal for the WWE Championship and Owen vs. Corbin vs. Zayn for the US Championship. I know cards are always subject to change, but they just announced these matches on Monday for the first time from what I remember seeing.  Plus Owens with the US Championship is just great heel TV!

Winner: Kevin Owens

Jinder Mahal (Champ) vs. Randy Orton (Punjabi Prison Match) –
WWE Championship Match

Source: WWE.com

You know, I have no idea what to expect from this. WWE touts that we haven’t seen one of these matches in over ten years. You know why? The other ones were no good and this structure and the rules don’t make too much sense in the grand scheme of things.

I don’t know where Orton goes after this except hopefully away.  If Styles isn’t next in line for the belt then it’ll be Mr. All-American Hulk Hoga…I mean, John Cena.  I’m sure the Sing Brothers will help in some form yet again.  I’d be surprised if we see the belt on Jinder “I need a lozenge” Mahal after Summerslam.

Winner: Jinder Mahal

I know some are also expecting Baron Corbin to cash in his MITB opportunity here but I don’t think it will happen.  He’ll wait until a face has the championship, has just won a match and take advantage of the situation.  Not happening here.
