Star Wars Black Series Obi-Wan Kenobi – SDCC 2016 Exclusive
I spent way too much money on exclusives this year. I’ve collected the Masters of the Universe Classics chase figure, Anti-Eternia He-Man, the hero and villain TMNT sets from SDCC (from NECA), the NYCC TMNT villains set (coming soon as I just grabbed one), AND the SDCC Star Wars Black Series Kylo Ren.
About a month and a half ago, I finally got the second of three SDCC exclusives from Hasbro and the Star Wars Black Series: Obi-Wan Kenobi. Yeah, I know I’m way behind other sites who have taken a look at this, but when our dollar conversion rate sucks and us Canadians can’t a) get to these conventions, b) don’t get the review samples other sites do, and c) don’t get the opportunities to get these online at original prices, it puts toy lovers and reviewers like me way back. All bitching aside, I’m still happy to share this with those of you who check out my site.
Note: If you don’t want to read, jump to the end to watch a video from my YouTube channel.
I knew he was going to have a single carded figure down the road (just like they did with Jabba the Hutt and Boba Fett), but the packaging and the extra that came with this figure made it almost impossible to turn down.
The packaging for this still follows what we’ve been used to with the Black Series – black packaging with a picture/silhouette of the character somewhere on it. For this package, the image of Obi-Wan is right front and centre. The cool thing about the packaging is that you can actually remove the cardboard piece that features his image to reveal the figure inside so you don’t have to have the flap open.
If you do keep the cardboard piece with the image on it in place, when you open the flap, there’s the actual dialogue spoken by Princess Leia written on the inside.
The figure itself is in the regular Black Series 6” scale and features the same mix of plastic and soft goods. I think the face sculpt is one of the better Black Series sculpts with a pretty good likeness of Obi-Wan/actor Alec Guinness. There’s some decent textures in the hair and the beard and I think the eyes are done well, although one of my pupils seems to be just a tad larger than the other.
The outfit has the wrinkles and look you would expect from Obi-Wan’s inner robe. It’s made of the same plastic we’re used to with the series. The outer robe is a softer cloth material. I really like the worn look of the outfit at his writs as it’s not just a clean look – and it shouldn’t be, so I’m happy they added that little attention to detail.
While the figure is pretty damn good, I was more excited about the bonus accessory: a holographic Princess Leia and the table from Obi-Wan’s den. Now, this isn’t just a pretty looking piece as it also has a function.
If you press one of the little table thingies (I don’t know what the hell they’re called), a sound clip of the entire speech given by Princess Leia at this part of the movie will play and the hologram will light up. Once the speech is finished, if you press it again, you’ll just hear her say, “Help me, Obi-Wan Kenobi. You’re my only hope.” What a cool bonus!
I’ll just also point out the batteries are included so mint on card/mint in box collectors, such as myself, don’t have to take anything out to hear it.
The figure also comes with two lightsabers (his and Anakin’s). I mean, what’s an Obi-Wan Kenobi figure without a Jedi weapon, right? The detailing on the hilts are decent, but seeing how I’m keeping these how they are, I’m not sure if the blades are removable. I would assume they are as Obi-Wan has that place to hold a hilt on his belt.
For those still sitting on the fence or were in the dark that this got released, tracking it down for a lower price (but still higher than what they were selling them at SDCC) is a bit better as the hype has gone down. As well, determining if this is worth the extra money just for different packaging and a bonus accessory is all up to your needs for your collection, obviously. I thought it was a gorgeous package and display, so even though I will be picking up Obi-Wan again in the regular series, this was an exclusive that I just could pass up tracking down.
