Mint in Box: Ultimate Jason by NECA
It’s Friday the 13th today, so to follow up on my look at the Ultimate Freddy Figure, I’m taking a look at the Ultimate Jason figure by NECA. This figure came out in December of 2015 and I snagged mine at the beginning of January, 2016. Let’s see if the figure is as much of a hit for me as Freddy was.
Right away, this purchase gets two thumbs up simply because of the packaging. Just like the Ultimate Freddy figure, the box features a large picture of the Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives poster on the front. The gloss on the box gives it a high-end collectible feel.
On the back we see a small bio bit on Tommy Jarvis, the kid who killed Jason in Friday the 13th Part IV: The Final Chapter and how he goes back to see Jason’s grave at the beginning of Part VI: Jason Lives. What about Part V: A New Beginning? Well, that’s a whole other can of worms that I don’t have the time to discuss in this feature.
The box opens the same as the Freddy figure – with a little piece of Velcro securely holding the front flap in place. When opened, you see the figure posed with some accessories on the left and the Jason action figure in the window box packaging on the right.
Once again I’ll say NECA has Mint in Card collectors and those who open figures both covered. You can easily take Jason in and out of the box without any worry. Seeing how this is going to stay Mint in the Box for my collecting habits, it’s nice to know that if I do want to take it out at all to do some pictures and poses down the road, I can do so without damaging the box or the trays.
As foreshadowed by the front of the box and mentioned above, this figure is inspired from the Jason Voorhees from Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives and was released to commemorate the 30th (!!!) anniversary of that movie. In my opinion, that is one of the best movies in the series and one I watched often in my preteen days. I’m happy that they packaged the figure in the box without his mask as it gives collectors the chance to see the sculpt If they aren’t going to open their figure.
One thing I noticed while taking some photos that I didn’t on my first few looks at this figure/packaging is that the figure is packaged like Jason is IN his grave. Notice the tombstone above the figure? What an awesome idea and neat touch! There’s a gas can at the bottom right as well.
The head sculpt has great textures where the rotting muscle tissues are accentuated with places where it’s actually deteriorated and his skull is exposed. The textures on the skin/muscle tissue goes all the way down his neck. One eye is still usable while the other one has rotted away. It’s a cool head sculpt but it just doesn’t look evil enough for me. Mind you, I think having this face sculpted is a bonus and most people will pose Jason with his mask on.
The body sculpt features over 25 points of articulation, so you know you’ll be able to get Jason in a variety of awesome poses. Could you imagine if NECA released a victims pack that featured how some of those poor bastards were slaughtered by Jason? I’m sure people would cry foul, but I think it’s a great, yet morbid idea.
I like how the shirt has detailing of wrinkles and how it’s got a wet look to it as well (like how it was because it was raining at the beginning of the movie). The belt and the pouches are done well and I really like how the shirt is a hanging over his pants. His knife can fit in the pouch on his right.
The weapons he comes with are a hunting knife, his trusty machete (all Jason figures should come with one), and the fence post that is struck by lightning that resurrects him in the movie. I’m really impressed with the fine details on the hunting knife. All the grooves in the blade give it a realistic look.
Other accessories that come with this figure are a gravestone head with his name on it and, of course, his iconic mask. This mask is one of the best I’ve seen for a Jason in this scale because I think the size of it for his head is perfect and just how the curvature of it brings realism to the design. He also has an extra hand (under the hunting knife) that fits that weapon better.
Even though I haven’t taken him out of the box (hence being part of my Mint In Box features), I really love the figure. Is he as awesome a Freddy? I think that depends on your preferred horror franchise. I think I’m always going to be biased towards Freddy over Jason, but I don’t really have any complaints with this figure. I say if you can afford both characters, get em both! And if I could afford another one of these just to hang out on a shelf somewhere, I would have bought two.
